Links to Uploaded Files

If you need to place a file (such as a Portable Document Format (pdf)) on the wiki so that a reader can download the file by clicking on a link, you need to do the following:

• Upload the file using the Upload File link in the toolbox at the left of the screen.
• Assign the uploaded file a name within the wiki, e.g., 'uploaded_doc.pdf'.
• Link to it using the form [[Media:uploaded_doc.pdf| Text to display for link]]

Clicking on the link will cause the file to be downloaded.

The alternative form [[Image:uploaded_doc.pdf| Caption]] is only useful with images that MediaWiki can actually display within the page. PDFs are displayed by showing the information about the uploaded file, which is generally not what is wanted.

At present the N4C wiki is set to allow most sorts of image files, plus PDF, Power Point presentations and ZIP archives to be uploaded.
