Arctic Communications
LTU is engaged in Arctic communications initiatives, mainly under the auspices of the Arctic Council and its Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG). The work has this far been concentrated to meetings co-organized by the Institute of the North and the SDWG office. A more substantial technical content is being developed together with Richard Beck, University of Cincinnati. For instance, a couple of sections in the N4C application to EC was fetched from texts originally written by Dr. Beck (the GPSDTN vision for Arctic communications, and the section reviewing satellite coverage in the Arctic). One of the initiatives Richard Beck presently works with is the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium (BASC).
The N4C Consortium submitted its first proposal to FP7 ICT-1 before getting funding from ICT-2. Already for this first application, Sweden's Senior Arctic official Ambassador Helena Ödmark wrote a letter of support that explains the role of the Arctic Council and how ICT - and the N4C project - fits into the picture.
